Barrel Velocity Estimator
Estimate likely muzzle velocity ranges by caliber family and barrel-length bucket.
Calculator
Estimated muzzle velocity
2,650-3,025 fps
Load profile: 62gr (M855)
Range varies by ammo load, chamber, temperature, altitude, and chronograph method.
Longer barrels often retain more velocity, though gains are load-dependent.
Methodology and lookup table
These values are normalized estimate ranges by barrel bucket for the selected caliber slug and load profile. They are intended for directional planning only.
Load impact model: each caliber has up to three common loads with one default. The selected load applies a conservative offset to baseline velocity ranges; lighter loads usually trend higher and heavier loads usually trend lower.
| Barrel bucket | Estimated velocity range |
|---|---|
| 10.5 in and under | 2,320-2,695 fps |
| 11.5 to 12.5 in | 2,450-2,825 fps |
| 13.7 to 14.5 in | 2,550-2,925 fps |
| 16 in | 2,650-3,025 fps |
| 18 in and over | 2,740-3,115 fps |
